“What If Today Was Your Last ‘Someday’?”
Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine you’re at the end of your life, looking back. What’s that one dream you always said you’d pursue “someday”? Now, open your eyes. Why isn’t today that someday?
Let’s play a game. Complete this sentence: “Someday I want to _______.”
Got your answer? Great. Now, here’s the million-dollar question: What’s really stopping you from breaking that seemingly impossible dream into bite-sized, actionable steps? Is it fear? Time? Or is it the comfort of keeping that dream safely tucked away in the realm of “someday”?
Let me take you back to my early days as a bright-eyed Account Executive at Merrill Lynch. Back then, the holy grail was the million-dollar producer – a rare breed of financial advisor who brought in over $1M annually for the firm. We’re talking less than 2% of all advisors. These folks were legends, unicorns, the stuff of water cooler whispers.
But here’s the kicker – when I actually met these top performers, I realized something profound. Their secret wasn’t a trust fund, a golden Rolodex, or a pact with the universe. It was a decision. A seemingly irrational, audacious decision to be in that top 2% – without having a clue how they’d get there.
That decision was their turning point. It rewired their brains, aligning every thought and action with that vision. And day by day, that “impossible” future became their reality.
Fast forward to my 6th year, and I hit that million-dollar mark myself. At the recognition dinner, a colleague approached me:
“Congrats! You must be so relieved,” he said.
“Thanks, but… relieved?” I replied, puzzled.
“Well, yeah. Even if you never do it again, at least you did it once.”
I was floored. This guy had the same license, the same opportunities, and a decade more experience. Yet, his “someday” dream remained just that – a dream. His decision to stay the same was reaffirmed every single day.
So, let me leave you with this gem from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Gandalf wisely says, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
We don’t know how much time we have. But we do know this: Every day, we decide whether today is “someday” or just another day of waiting.
What will you decide today?
