After a decade dissecting other people’s balance sheets on Wall Street, Nate Littlewood walked away, bootstrapped a seven-figure e-commerce business, and discovered the hardest skill in business isn’t finding good ideas — it’s ignoring 95% of them. He joins Gary Sinderbrand to unpack what changes when you stop judging companies from the outside and have to build one yourself.

In this episode, Gary and Nate Littlewood discuss:

  • Sell-side equity research and the buy-side pressure behind ratings
  • Leaving a secure finance career for entrepreneurship
  • Kickstarter as pre-sales, capital, and a customer base
  • Founder “shiny object” addiction and the case for focus
  • Fractional CFO work: frameworks, trust-building, and month-to-month terms

Key Takeaways:

  • Comfort is not the same as fulfillment. A career can be objectively excellent and still be the wrong one, especially if you never chose it deliberately in the first place.
  • Leaving certainty feels like free fall — right up until the parachute opens and you finally see how much else was out there.
  • Crowdfunding isn’t just money. Pre-selling a product buys you capital, a first customer base, and a deadline that forces an imperfect version into the market.
  • The founder’s love of learning new skills is also the founder’s biggest liability; a constant dopamine rush from acquiring capabilities can masquerade as progress.
  • Knowing where you don’t belong is as valuable as knowing where you do. Excelling at the analytical half of the CEO role is a good reason to become the co-pilot rather than the pilot.

“No one’s going to, you know, really criticize you for having a buy and getting it wrong, but having a sell and getting that wrong is, you know, there are big repercussions to that.” — Nate Littlewood

About Nate Littlewood:

Nate started his own eCommerce brand in 2017 and bootstrapped it from a $40K Kickstarter campaign into a 7-figure business. He has sold millions of dollars worth of product through Amazon, Shopify, and Wholesale, and worked with vendors, suppliers, co-packers, and 3PLs both domestically and abroad. He also got an MBA and, prior to getting into entrepreneurship, had a 9-year career at a Global Investment Bank.

Nate is a Lead Mentor for an accelerator program called Food Future Co based in New York and an Advisor for the Startmate Program in Australia. He has worked with dozens of early-stage founders and helped prepare them for their next investment round.

In his spare time, he loves camping, biking, and pretty much anything that involves food (cooking, eating, and exploring!)
